Production process

This mead was boiled before fermentation. The thermal process has certain technological advantages, however, some valuable components of honey are damaged, especially during prolonged boiling. Near the famous Plinkaigalio hillfort, on the banks of the fast-flowing Šušvė river, where our ancestors already prospered in prehistoric times, the old craft of mead-making has been revived

It produces the oldest traditional alcoholic drink in the world - mead, which was already popular among the ancient Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and which soon spread throughout the world. Lithuanians drank different types of mead from "antiquity" until the 18th century; therefore, mead is considered our national drink.

Mead is a naturally fermented, unfortified alcoholic beverage. Šušvės midus mead is made from natural honey collected by bees from their own apiary, so it always guarantees high quality mead.

Erikas Augustinavičius is the third generation of beekeepers in his family, his grandfather and mother are also beekeepers. Currently, they have their own apiary where 150 beehives are buzzing. Mead was already produced by his grandfather and mother, from whom he took over the secret of mead production. A few years ago, he decided to turn his hobby into a legitimate business.

Our family is from Kėdainiai district, Plinkaigalio village, on the banks of the Šušvė river, near the famous Plinkaigalio burial mound and the Iron Age cemetery. According to archaeologists, mead was known and used at various festivals and celebrations in our region already in prehistoric times.

He continued the old tradition of the region and based on his mother's experience and his own knowledge, he established a mead farm. They don't skimp on honey when making mead - each liter of mead contains up to 750 g of honey. They do not use any chemical additives during production, only natural raw materials (a small amount of sulphite naturally occurs during production). This distinguishes them from other manufacturers.

Mead matures for at least 1 year, some types of mead for at least 3 years. Honey is the main ingredient that gives mead its color, taste and aroma. The taste of ripe mead is noble, subtly sweet, full.

They fill mead into bottles of original design; the stoppers are covered with natural beeswax, so the pleasant aroma spreads even without opening the bottle.
